One of the main goals of Song Flight is to help kids get in touch with their feelings. Why? Because, as neuroscience has proven time and time again, how children feel has a huge impact on how they learn. In addition, children who are in touch with and know how to handle their feelings stand a better chance of growing into kind, capable adults who value differences, understand the value of collaboration, and are not afraid of failure. In other words, they are emotionally intelligent.
Song Flight accomplishes this goal through a combination of immersive storytelling, creative self-expression (drawing, singing, dancing, games, puzzles, etc.), self-awareness exercises, and project-based learning activities. These all encourage kids to apply what they’ve learned to their everyday lives. For example, every child receives a nature journal and is asked to spend a little time each day observing and recording the birds they see and hear.
Week three’s story took us deeper into the puzzle of the message we discovered in week two. We practiced deep breathing and humming to quiet our minds and experienced a little bit of magic connected to our character’s feelings. Then, just to make sure the kids had a tangible takeaway from our visit, we created touchstones of our own!
We hope you enjoy watching the video of our adventures as much as we enjoyed the activities in it. Stay tuned for our final episode in Week 4 entitled, “Possibility.”
