Introductions
This is the first of a series of posts introducing the Song Flight community to folks around the world who are doing remarkable work in their various fields that is both constructive (ie making a difference) and emotionally intelligent. It is an attempt to introduce people who might not ordinarily know about one another - to cross disciplines, encourage collaboration, and outside-the-box thinking, and to help us see that regardless of our areas of expertise we all have a stake in what and how we teach out children.
Today’s post is by Elmari Schutte. She is a talented copywriter with an important mission - helping adults communicate authentically from the heart. Her focus aligns well with Song Flight since children are keen observers of adult behavior. They pay close attention to what and how adults communicate and then mimic what they see. Read on to learn about the heart’s intelligence and learn some of Elmari’s practical tools for heart-centered communication that you can pass along to your children.
Lead With Your Heart
Do you know what your heart does for you?
Off course you do.
Your heart pumps over 6,000 liters (or 2,000 gallons) of blood per day.
And all of it runs through 100,000 kilometers (60,000 miles) of veins.
That is amazing!
But that’s not all your heart does for you.
Your heart has its own brain. The HeartMath Institute found an intrinsic nervous system in the heart and this is a brain.* This brain sends more messages to the brain in your skull than the other way around.
I don’t know about you, but this little fact changed my whole perspective on how I think and act. Or rather, what is behind my thoughts and actions.
Your Heart Knows Before Your Brain Does
We tend to use the expression “Follow your heart.” in a very nonchalant way. But did you know your heart knows what to expect before your brain receives any information?
In a study by the HeartMath Institute, participants saw different pictures on a screen. These pictures caused different reactions in the participant. Between each picture, the participant saw a blank screen.
We know our hearts beat faster when we’re upset or angry, and our heart rhythm stays the same when we are calm.
In the study, both the heart and the brain received information before the picture appeared on the screen. But the participant’s heartbeat changed a few seconds before the brain received any information. So the heart knew what to expect before the brain knew anything about it.**
What Drives Your Passion and Purpose?
Let’s look at what this means.
Your heart knows what’s happening before your brain does. And your heart sends more messages to your brain than the other way around. Then it makes sense that your heart may be telling you what to think, do, and say.
So your calling or purpose is driven by your heart. The passion you feel for a certain cause is inspired by your heart.
How You Can Use This For Good
Do you sometimes feel you want to share something and don’t know where to start?
You know you want to write about a project, person, or cause you’re passionate about. But it feels as if something is blocking you and you can’t even put the first sentence in writing.
Putting your words and ideas on paper can be overwhelming, but you can overcome this.
Focus on your breathing for a moment. Simply notice your breathing and see what the tempo is. You may find as soon as you focus on it you will breathe a little deeper than normal.
Now breathe into your heart space. It may be easier if you place your hand on your heart and feel how your breath is filling your lungs.
Keep going until you don’t feel overwhelmed anymore.
When you’re ready, ask your heart to guide you in what you want to write about.
This works better if you write with a pen or pencil on paper. But even if you want to type something it’s easier to overcome overwhelm if you focus on breathing into your heart.
You can certainly learn to listen to your heart and speak or write from your heart.
It sounds logical to me that your heart’s message will speak to, and reach the heart of the receiver.
How Will A Heart-Centered Message Impact The World?
Imagine for a moment that every message shared around the world is heart-centered. How much joy and peace does it bring to everyone?
I can’t change what everyone is doing.
But I can change how I show up in the world.
And so can you.
